But the feature will be missing at the EU launch, and every technical claim so far comes from Apple itself.
Apple announced on September 9, 2026, a new feature called Reference Image at its "Surprise and shine" event. The feature ships with the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max later this month, and is supposed, according to Apple, to use the phone's new camera sensor to "sign every pixel it sees" as proof that an image hasn't been manipulated by AI, according to The Verge, which reported from the event.
How It's Supposed to Work
Authentication doesn't happen automatically. Only photos taken in a dedicated Reference mode are signed. When the camera captures signed sensor data, Apple's Private Cloud Compute is supposed to develop it into "an unalterable reference image" that can be displayed in the Photos app. There, the user can compare the reference with other versions of the image to see whether edits have been made (The Verge, citing Apple's own statements).
ZDNET writes in its coverage that the feature creates a secure, uneditable version of photos both to verify authenticity in a deepfake era and to prove ownership if the images are used without permission. ZDNET is secondary reporting and may be based on the same announcement.
What Sets This Apart from Existing Labeling Standards?
As AI-generated images and videos become more realistic, several standards for labeling non-human-made content have emerged, such as Google's SynthID, C2PA, and Meta's Content Seal. Apple's twist is to build authentication directly into the hardware, rather than labeling content after the fact (The Verge's analytical framing).
In practice, that means the signing happens as early in the chain as possible — at the sensor-data level — while most existing schemes label content at the software level. That is Apple's claim; no independent technical review of the mechanism exists.
Ecosystem and Third-Party Inspection
Apple is opening a Reference Image API across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, which could give users the ability to inspect digitally signed images in third-party apps over time (The Verge). That's a necessary step if the references are to have value outside Apple's own apps: a proof of authenticity that can only be checked in the Photos app is of limited use.
The EU Caveat
The iPhone 18 Pro will not come with Reference Image at launch in the EU, Apple says. Users in the region will still, according to the company, be able to "develop and view" reference images in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 (The Verge). The reason the feature is missing at the EU launch has not been explained — it is unclear whether it concerns regulatory requirements or service availability.
What We Don't Know
All claims about how Reference Image works come from Apple, relayed via The Verge and ZDNET. Both sources may be based on the same announcement and should not be read as independent confirmation of sensor-level signing. The cryptographic mechanism has not been documented, and it is unknown how robust the reference actually is against manipulation — or whether processing in Private Cloud Compute introduces new weaknesses. It is also not settled whether the feature remains exclusive to the Pro line.
Hardware-based signing is in theory stronger evidence than software-based labels. In practice, it is so far Apple's promise, not a verified mechanism — and European users will only get to test it, at best, with the next OS generation.
