Huawei has pushed the Ascend 960DT launch to the first quarter of 2027 and unveiled the Atlas 960 SuperPoD at Huawei Connect in Shanghai — a week after Bloomberg reported that the company's most powerful AI chip has become roughly 60 percent more expensive in three months.

Huawei used its annual Huawei Connect conference in Shanghai on September 17, 2026, to deliver two messages at once: The company's next generation of AI chips is arriving earlier than promised, and the systems built around them are to be scaled up significantly. At the same time, a separate price report points to something other than the marketing videos — that demand for Huawei's existing chips exceeds what the company can deliver.

An accelerated roadmap

According to TechCrunch, which reported directly from the conference, Huawei's rotating and acting chairman David Wang announced that the Ascend 960DT is now expected to be ready in the first quarter of 2027 — moved up from the originally planned third quarter of 2027. A Huawei spokesperson explained the acceleration this way, as quoted by TechCrunch: "The Ascend 960DT is expected to be ready in Q1 2027. The Ascend 960 chips are launching ahead of schedule, with double the performance and year-on-year improvements."

The conference also brought new hardware. Huawei's Atlas 960 SuperPoD, a computing cluster presented as a faster successor to the model the company launched only months earlier, will according to AP via NBC News feature improvements in both AI training and "inference" — the process by which a trained model makes predictions or decisions. The company also laid out its further roadmap: the Ascend 970 series planned for 2028 and the Ascend 980 series for 2029.

The price signal

A week before the conference, on September 10, Bloomberg reported something Huawei itself has not confirmed: The suggested price of the Ascend 950DT, the company's most powerful AI accelerator, is said to have risen by roughly 60 percent to 250,000 yuan — about $37,300 per chip — over three months. The information comes from sources with knowledge of the matter who have asked to remain anonymous, because the discussions are not public.

One of the sources said the price was set in line with Nvidia's B200. That is an indicative comparison worth noting: Huawei's top chip is thus being priced against Nvidia's B200. But it is also worth stressing what the report is not: neither a Huawei statement nor a confirmed price list. The framing that demand exceeds supply comes via Bloomberg's reporting and sources, not in the form of a quote from the company.

How the systems fit together

Around the chips lies an architecture that is as important to Huawei's competitiveness as the chip itself. Huawei's Peerium Computing Architecture uses what the company calls UnifiedBus to connect chips and systems. The Atlas 950 SuperPoD and SuperCluster are the first systems based on the architecture, and Huawei states itself that an Atlas 950 SuperCluster can connect up to 256,000 accelerator cards. These are the company's own figures, not independently verified measurements.

What was not delivered

While the chip timeline was accelerated, analysis points to something else: the systems presented are smaller than what Huawei previously outlined. China analyst Rui Ma noted that the publicly announced Atlas 960 SuperPoD scales to 4,096 chips, against an earlier stated goal of a configuration with 15,488 Ascend 960 chips. Her conclusion, as quoted by TechCrunch: "The chip itself is coming MUCH earlier, but the SuperPoD they announced is much smaller than what they originally laid out."

This is not a contradiction in itself — Huawei's accelerated timeline may well be genuine, while also being the easiest path to a shippable chip. But it means the gap between Huawei's most ambitious system plans and what is actually delivered is an open question, not a settled fact.

Geopolitical timing

The timing is no accident. The announcement in Shanghai came days before the expected meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington on September 24. Analysts point out, according to AP, that the timing underscores Beijing's technology ambitions, and that advanced technologies in China — such as training AI models — still often depend on American chips, including Nvidia's. At the same time, Chinese companies are increasingly open to domestic alternatives.

That makes the two signals of this week two parts of the same picture: Demand for Chinese alternatives is real enough that prices are rising sharply, and Huawei is trying to capitalize by accelerating product development. But the company is competing under persistent US export restrictions that have limited access to advanced chip manufacturing, and analysts still point to a reliance on American technology for demanding training tasks.

Open questions

Three things remain to be confirmed. First: The price increase on the Ascend 950DT rests on anonymous Bloomberg sources; Huawei has not confirmed it. Second: Whether the accelerated timeline for the Ascend 960DT holds — a risk given the production and sanctions pressures the company operates under. Third: Whether Huawei can close the scale gap Rui Ma points to, between the 4,096-chip system presented and the 15,488-chip configuration originally promised. Until that is settled, both the performance claim of doubling year by year and system sizes like 256,000 cards should be read as the company's own claims — not as established facts.
