OpenAI's IPO is off for 2026, with safety concerns at the center

Sam Altman has confirmed the company will not go public this year — but has given no new date. The same week, SoftBank upsized its OpenAI-related loan to $11.87 billion, making the delay matter well beyond OpenAI itself.

Sam Altman has confirmed that OpenAI will not go public in 2026 — but he has not offered a new date. The news lands the same week SoftBank detailed its debt-funded bet on the company, with an $11.87 billion loan to finance its OpenAI investment.

What is confirmed — and what is not

OpenAI will not go public in 2026. That is the core of an interview CEO Sam Altman gave Fortune on September 12, which several outlets covered in the days after. According to Fox Business, which reproduces the interview, Altman said "we're not rushing into an IPO" and that "I think given everything that's happening with safety… right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public." All quotations are relayed via Fortune through secondary sources (16e73ee5).

But what Altman actually said is narrower than the headlines suggest. Mashable points out that although many outlets have reported the IPO is now delayed to 2027, Altman told Fortune's Alyson Shontell only that the listing will not happen this year — and that it will come "when the business is ready." A 2027 date is thus not confirmed in his own words (3658335a).

Safety as the stated reason

Altman tied the delay to safety and alignment. That same weekend, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei had called on AI labs to slow the pace of development until stronger safety measures are in place, and Altman has publicly committed to coordinating on this, Mashable writes (3658335a).

According to 24/7 Wall St., Altman further suggested that OpenAI and other leading labs "may be close to announcing a pact to slow AI development and collectively address the rapidly increasing safety risks" — with internal talk of "tapping the brakes" on the most advanced models. This, however, is suggested, not announced (6a5665fe). No formal agreement exists in the evidence so far.

What happens to the IPO process?

The listing process is already underway: OpenAI filed a confidential S-1 with the US Securities and Exchange Commission in June, Fox Business reports. An S-1 is the preparatory document for a listing, and a confidential filing lets a company work with the regulator away from public attention. The delay therefore does not mean the process is abandoned — but OpenAI has set an undefined pace, governed by "when the business is ready" (16e73ee5).

Why it matters: SoftBank keeps taking on more debt

The delay lands in a week when SoftBank — Masayoshi Son's biggest AI bet — has just expanded a multi-billion-dollar commitment. According to Bloomberg via The Japan Times, SoftBank Group secured a two-year loan of $11.87 billion from around 20 banks to finance its investment in OpenAI — above its original $10 billion target (f04f7dd1).

The contrast is striking: while OpenAI delays its listing citing safety, SoftBank is deepening its debt-funded bet. Bloomberg Opinion columnist Shuli Ren frames it this way: as SoftBank prepares a historic dollar bond sale, "a surprising twist in Son's biggest bet gives traders pause" (1336b5e5). For the bond market, a listing that slips past the calendar is more than a footnote — it touches the valuation horizon for one of the companies carrying much of the AI optimism.

Timing unresolved

The concrete answer to "when" is not yet available. Altman has ruled out 2026, pointed to a moment "when the business is ready," and tied the pace to safety work. Whether an industry pact on slowing down is actually announced — and what effect that would have on the product and revenue plans the listing rests on — remain open questions.
